Big nose

Luca: almost 3 years old

Today’s funny comment from you:

“Papa, why do you have a big nose today?”

Papa: “I always have a big nose, Luca.”

Luca: “oh I know. You ate a lot of vegetables today. That’s why”

Papa: πŸ˜†

While I was preparing your dessert in the kitchen I overheard the conversations. I thought it was funny and cute. β™₯️

Love you very much,

Mama

Happy New Year!

I am not sure how this happened! We are in the new year already!! Without knowing it, time flies and our clock is moving forward so fast. Mama is a full time mom, and when I come back home, I play with you, I eat with you, I bathe you, I read Japanese books to you and I kiss you good night and when you are ready to come out from your crib, I sleep with you. My daily routine is so full of joy and happiness, I don’t mind time flies but sometimes I want it to slow down because you are growing soooo fast!!

I feel so fortunate that I have such a happy family who supports me in any ways. You are a full of energy, healthy and happy kid. Your Papa is super funny and supportive. He always makes us laugh. That’s what I love about him and my family. We are always laughing. πŸ˜„

I wish our happiness and our health will go the long way. Happy New Year, Luca!

I love you very much,

Your Mama

Potty Training #2

Luca: 2.7 years old

We finally started your potty training from December 28th. Mama took 2 days off on Thursday and Friday and I was hoping you will get used to this before you go back to school on January 8th.

The whole weekend until January 2nd was rough, to be honest. Maybe Mama and Papa looked very intense on our faces even though our words were like “Next time, you have to pee pee (or poo poo) on the potty ok?” We say very gently. You still had to make some “accidents” in your pants. On 3rd day, I think you started to understand and being able to hold on your pee pee until you get to the bathroom, well most of the times. But you know what happened? On the 3rd day, I thought if we took your underwear off completely, I mean you were half naked, this training would go much smoother and better.

Well, not quite…. I tried to keep my eyes on you literally for the whole time. Except this just “2 seconds” to pick up a little bit of chips on the floor. As soon as I looked away and tried to pick it up with my fingers, you said “Mama, poo poo!” I was so excited that you called it out so I picked you up and brought to the master bathroom. You sat on the toilet and waiting for the pee and poo come out. You succeeded on the pee part but we didn’t see poo out. Although I saw tiny poo sticking on your leg. I wondered what happened and looked back around the door area and guess what I found on the floor!! Your poop!! 😱 And it seemed like I stepped on it (I had my socks on… Thank god!) too!! πŸ˜‚

After the incident, we thought you were not quite ready yet. I was honestly disappointed. πŸ˜• I tried to look back what we did wrong, what we can do any better, or you were not ready at all…

But we didn’t give up! We always tell you “never give up” and we should be the good example for you too.

So now it’s Jan 3rd (7th day), we tried not to give you any pressure. If you call it out from yourself, we take you to the bathroom. Sometimes we give you the reminder but it was all up to you even though you wet your pants.

In the morning of Jan 3rd, you told me you didn’t have to go pee pee just yet when I asked you if you needed to go. I said “ok. Let us know when you are ready”. You said “ok Mama”. But later on I had an idea to tell him while I was brushing my teeth.

I said to you, “you know what. You just ate your breakfast right?

You: “yeah it was good”

Mama: “I think Mr. Toilet is hungry too. He just told me he hasn’t eaten since yesterday”

You: (your eyes were enlightened) “really?”

Mama: “Yup. So if you can poo poo there (pointing the toilet bowl), he would be so happy and say “Thank you, Luca! Yum yum!” (Sorry it’s not a pretty story)

So you took off for a couple min and came back and said “Mama, pee pee!”

You sat down on the toilet, and you DID it!! Pee and… poo!! Hallelujah!! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

Mama had to call Papa and celebrated with you!! You looked so happy and proud of yourself. And we were too!!

And you finally got some chocolates as a reward!

From this day, you started to call it out more often and you seem to understand how it should be without a diaper!!

This is a huge milestone for you. Mama and Papa are very proud of you that you are growing bigger and bigger. β€οΈπŸ˜„

Now we are getting close to be diaper free days!!

Great job, Luca.

We love you very much.

Much love, Your Mama ❀️

2nd Merry Christmas! πŸŽ„

Luca: 2.6 years old

Merry Christmas, Luca!

This is super big deal for you and you were waiting for this moment for a long time!

You met Santa Claus and you wished you would want a Monster Truck. And he said “ok Luca, if you are a good boy, I will send you one”.

I think you tried and helped Mama and Papa a lot and finally you received a lot of presents including a couple monster trucks! I think it was overwhelming for all of us that we had so many presents from Santa Claus. Maybe he was so happy you were a good boy. You played a lot, ate a lot, slept a lot, and went to school at the end of the year. You deserved it!

Love you very much, Your Mama

Preschool started!

IMG_6023.JPG

Luca: 2.5 years old

Your preschool finally started on November 13th!

At first, you didn’t know what is going to happen so first 2 days, you were so excited to go to school. Mama thought “Oh wow, it was such a piece of cake!” because I thought you were going to cry as soon as I leave. But … the crying started when you learned “school” is somewhere Mama and Papa won’t be with you. So as soon as you figured out, you refused to go to school. Crying a lot at the beginning. Mrs. Ann took care of you so well that she said you were getting used to it.

But after a week, you got some germs from kids at school and you got cold. A lot of runny noses, sneazing, and coughing. And I got it from you and Papa got it from you after all. Luckily, we had Thanksgiving weekend was coming up so you took the Wednesday off and we were hoping you will be better by Monday. However, the cold was persistent. You still coughed with a runny nose on Monday so finally, you went back to school next day, Tuesday. (Btw, I love how you say “Medicine”. You say “Mecident”. So cute! ❀ )

So you haven’t gone to school for about a week and now you have to get used to your school again. Again, you cry a lot at the beginning but now once I leave you at school, Mrs. Ann told me that you stop crying and start the class with the other kids fine. Making friends or having friends is a different story though. I think it will take some time to get used to everything so one by one.

Also, Mrs. Ann told me that you do so well in the class. She asks you to bring your work and ask Mrs. Ann for checking your work by saying “Check (my work) please!” and you do it! She also said you are a very intelligent boy. πŸ™‚ I’m so proud of you!!

I know it will take some time but I know you will be fine at the school. There are great teachers there and I completely trust them.

My project to think about is how to make you think your school is fun. We always sing a song or two in the car while we are driving to school like “Boon Ba Bong”, “Totoro” and “Ebi and Shrimp Mix” songs. And right now we can see Santa Claus on our street so we always drive by and say Hello. What else can I do to make you feel comfortable?
You always look worried on your face like “where is Mama taking me?” face. I sometimes try to switch the route but of course, we always end up to be in the same location so you cry anyway. I wish I know how to change your mind…

Much Love,
Yuko

2nd Happy Halloween!!

Luca: 2 years 5 months

Today was your 2nd Halloween! In the past years, we only went out to Douglas Park and played with the other kids and moms from the Mommy and Me class but this time, you dressed up and walked around the neighborhood to collect some candies!

I wasn’t planning to let you get some candies from the neighbors but since your neighbor, Ann and Lou gave your the Halloween bucket, I thought we might as well use the bucket.

You hopped on the stroller and cruised around in the darkness. You brought a flashlight so then you can see what’s going on on the street. We saw a bunch of kids and their families dressed up many things and so you did. You dressed up like… it was supposed to be the Where is Waldo character but since you broke the glasses 2 days before the Halloween, we switched it the Super Hero mask. But the outfit was still Waldo. πŸ™‚

Btw, your aunt Shino gave you the outfit. I thought the glasses were SO cute on you.

We went into probably 10 houses or so. You collected A LOT of candies! And you were amazed how much “candies” you received from strangers. This was your first time to see the packages of Reeses, M&Ms, Snickers, and the other candies. And you were just stared at those packages for a LONG time. But Papa and Mama told you when Halloween is over, the candies will be gone too. The point of having fun on Halloween is to collect candies, not eating them. When you grow older, you can have some candies on your own will. πŸ™‚ πŸ˜›

I was so happy to see your face that you were so excited about Halloween. πŸ™‚
I can’t wait to have Halloween again next year!

Much Love,
Mama

Such a cute thought β€οΈ

Luca: 28 months old

Today, after I came back from my work, Luca and I saw 3 helicopters in row which flies to the same direction.

I said “I wonder where they are going..?” Luca answered “Fruits!”

Hahahaha I knew what he meant. He just loves fruits and he thought that’s where they were going for. Such a cute thought!!

I love you as always!

Much Love, Mama

Bye Bye and Thank you Ba-Ba!

Luca: 26 months old

From Day 1 at his birth, a pacifier or pacifiers were his best friend. The hospital where we had Luca gave us a lot of pacifiers. Β He used to suck it all the time and eventually, we made him use it only for his bed time or nap time. But for a long time until now, he couldn’t leave his pacifier alone. If he cries, or hurt himself, he always relied on it. He loved to suck on it so then he felt secure, comfortable, and relax. When he had it in his mouth, he could fall to sleep right away.

I think not only Luca, his papa also relied on it as well because he didn’t want to deal with a cry baby. Once Luca has the pacifier in his mouth, he immediately stops crying.
At one point, we had 8 pacifiers so than anywhere you go, you have one pacifier for sure. When he cried, we could always give it to him “right away”. It was very convenient for us, and for him too. He loved it so much that he started to call it “Baba”. That was one of his first words.

But I started to notice like a month ago, when he smiles, I couldn’t see his front teeth at all. Comparing to other kids around his age, I thought it’s weird not to see his teeth because those front teeth are there but short. When I opened his upper lips, I could see where he sucks the pacifier at because those 2-3 teeth are the only ones shorter than the other ones. So I realized we need to stop using it.

In last mid-July, we planned to go up to Central California, Monterey, and Pacific Grove.
A few days before we left for the trip, I cut the tip of the pacifier by thinking he needs to know it is about to say bye-bye to the pacifier. Luca started to cry and kept saying “Baba broke!,Β baba broke!”. I still remember how painful it was to hear for me. I felt really bad for him. Maybe I did something wrong. His papa also told me I shouldn’t have done that. However, I told myself to hold it strong just for a few days then he will stop asking me about Baba.

In the Monterey trip, I hide one pacifier in my bag for just in case but I pretended I forgot to bring one. Luca kept asking me about Baba but I told him “Baba said bye bye because you are a big boy now. Baba had another baby to take care of now. His job with you are done and he is very happy with you that you are grown up.” I am not sure he understood that but he eventually stopped asking me or his papa for a baba. While we stayed in Monterey, he did ask us for it for a few times but when we say “remember, you don’t need one anymore” then he stopped asking without crying. I was very proud of him for not crying.

Now it’s been almost 2 months since we stopped using the baba. He does ask for it time to time but he is ok without Baba now.

I’m so glad I cut the tip of the pacifier now. πŸ˜€

Much Love,
Mama

The first family trip: Monterey

Luca: 26 months old
The latest milestone: Said goodbye to his pacifiers!

On July 14th – 16th, I finally took a day off on Friday and weΒ had the FIRST family trip to Monterey/San Jose/Pacific Grove. The weather was super nice, and the air was crisp. We were worried that it might be too hot but it was not that bad. After 6 hours drive, it was a little foggy already.

I was so excited to take this trip since it was our Anniversary weekend. I don’t know if you want to know, Luca, but we started to date on July 22nd, 2012. We are together for 5 years now! It has been a quite journey to be with your Papa and I am very thankful that I’ve met your Papa. He was the most definitelyΒ different person than the usual guys that I met in past. Very funny, very thoughtful, very honest (in good and bad ways), a straight forward person that I don’t ever have to wander around what he thinks in his head. He will tell you what’s going on in his head, no grey zone in the sense. I have so much grey zone in my head that I made him confused so much at the beginning. I think it’s ok to have grey zone but definitely, he trained me to communicate to deliver my thoughts to him.

This trip was to celebrate our togetherness with you and it was such a fun and beautiful trip. And it was so nice to get away from Los Angeles and my work.

And you know what happened at the end of the trip? Your Papa proposed me to marry him! πŸ˜€ I understand this is kind of backward (having you first and get married next…) but I am glad we finally can complete the perfect circle!

I was super happy that he asked me to marry him. As you may see in the photo, I cried because I was so happy!

The way he proposed me went like this…

You know I always love to take photos, with you or without you. Because I want to capture the fun or beautiful moment and want to look back anytime I want to.
But Papa is totally opposite. He likes to capture the moment in his head as a memory. So he ALWAYS reminds me to “enjoy the moment”. So he reminded me again at the small beach in Pacific Grove while I was taking some photos. “Mama, take your eyes off from your camera and capture this beautiful scenery in your mind. That is more memorable than looking back to the pictures”. I said to him “I know, I know but I would forget so that’s why I’m taking… (I have such a bad memory… I know it’s sad…)” and looked at Papa on my right side. All of the sudden, I found him bending on his knee on sands and asking me: “Mama, would you marry me?” I was soo panicked because of the sudden event, and my eyes tried to look for you because you were running around right in front of the ocean. My mind was like “what’s going on?”, “where is Luca?”, “wait, I thought he wanted to wait for getting married!” so I forgot to say “Yes”. But Papa didn’t give me a chance to say anything and said “Put it on your finger!” and I said “ok ok! Wow!! So pretty!” hahaha

Then I cried… and called Luca and finally, you came back to us.

We took some photos right after you came back and looked at the ocean without my camera, capture the special moment.

After while we spent some time on the beach, we walked back to our car. Then Papa said “Wait, did you say ‘Yes’ to me yet?”. Oops, I think I forgot because I was panicked! lol So now, finally I said “Yes” to Papa.

This trip became a perfect trip for Papa and Mama. ❀

I am not sure if you would remember this moment so when you read this, you can enjoy with us too.

Much Love,
Your Mama
